Hazera Genetics presents, at the Arava R&D Exhibition 19-20, 2010: Vitamin Rich Pepper

All of us are familiar with the enticing encounter, on the shelves of our local supermarket, greengrocer and market, with peppers in a rainbow of colors. Much has been said and written about pepper's contribution to our health, from preventing heart disease, through slowing the aging process due to its anti-oxidant properties, to contributing to the health of our digestive system and maintaining balanced glucose levels. Hazera Genetics company, that breeds, produces and markets hybrid seeds of vegetables and field crops, has developed, in collaborations with researchers from the Volcani Institute, a new line of pepper varieties with extremely high vitamin E, C, and A content, for optimal health.
Research was initiated in the mid 90s, by Prof. Arie Levy and Prof. Yossi Kener of Volcani Institute, and then transferred to Hazera Genetics. The sources of the vitamins in the new peppers are wild and cultivated varieties of peppers that were collected by researchers throughout the world. In addition to classic breeding, the research utilized molecular markers to shorten breeding times.
According to Itzik Ezra – Hazera Genetics' Director of the Israeli Market – "the company continues to develop new products that address consumer demands. Alongside quality, flavor and value, we also endeavor to reinforce the product's nutritional values and enhance the health benefits from consuming these peppers."
